Best 12 month CD rates topping 1.75% APY

After another abysmal month for bank CD rates, we tracked down a couple decent (decent being a relative term) rates offered on 12 month bank CDs. The national average for this particular product currently sits at a historically pathetic 1.26% APY - down from 1.30% APY at just the beginning of March. However, if you look hard enough you can still find FDIC or NCUA insured banking institutions offering above 1.70% APY on 1 year certificate of deposits.

Best 60 month CD rates topping 3.40% APY

While most financial analysts would be hesitant to recommend that anyone get into a 60 month CD (certificate of deposit) at this time, their rates have seemed to be wiggling higher as the shorter term rates continue their downward path. Some of the highest yielding 60 month CD rates provided by national institutions, which can accept deposits from anywhere in the country, are hitting the 3.40% APY mark. And some rates offered by smaller, geographically exclusive institutions (namely member-owned credit unions) are offering even more attractive rates on these products.

America Bank of Commerce’s 24 month CD rate - locals only

While it’s kind of disheartening hyping up a 24 month CD yielding only 2.32% APY, we still feel obligated considering the national average for 2 year CD rates sits at a pathetic 1.90% APY. Much thanks to BankVibe.com reader Sam for submitting this product for review!

Some small credit unions still paying 1.80% APY on 6 mo CDs

If you’ve been in the market for short term certificate of deposits for a while now then I’m sure there isn’t much need for us to iterate the current state of their rates, however for those whom are just entering the marketplace - please realize rates are FAR from decent. If you’ve been scanning through some of the larger national banks’ rate pages for 6 month CDs, 12 month CDs or even 18 month CDs you’ve probably noticed rates being offered at or around 1.0% APY.
