American Express Purchase Protection Perk

Did you know that if you buy something with an American Express card and it’s lost, damaged, or stolen within the first 90 days, American Express will replace the item or reimburse you up to the amount of the purchase price? My friend Michelle just came back from a skiing trip with her family in which she managed to get an oil stain on her brand new ski jacket. She had no idea how it got there but she took it to the cleaners and they were unable to remove the stain.

Bank of America Ends Some Overdraft Fees

Last year, Smithee reported that Bank of America was the first major bank to allow customers to opt out of overdraft protection and the associated fees. Those customers who opted out of overdraft protection would have their card rejected when attempting to make a purchase without the funds available.

Ban Credit Checks for Job Applications

Chris at The Consumerist referenced a story this week about how there are 16 states, including here in Maryland, considering a ban on using credit scores to make hiring decisions. Iv’e never personally experienced this or heard of a friend get denied a job because of their credit score, but this happens enough to warrant 16 states barring the practice.

Take a New Inventory of Your Credit Cards or Pay New Fees

I’m growing more concerned about my relationship with credit card issuers. We’ve been getting along mostly well for several years. I charge many of my expenses, pay my bills on time, collect some rewards, and they don’t levy any additional fees. These companies are certainly making money off of me through the interchange fees they charge the merchants with whom I do business, but my bank accounts still mostly benefit from the use of credit cards.

Credit CARD Act Rules Go Into Effect Today

The second phase of the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act goes into effect today, providing new regulations that protect consumers against high rates and fees from credit lenders. The Act also sets aside certain provisions to protect young borrowers, requiring a signature or proof that you can make your own payments in order to have a credit card, or increase the limit on you current credit card.
